Tip Calculator
The Tip Calculator computes gratuity and splits the bill between any number of people. Enter the bill amount, tip percentage, and party size for instant totals. Standard US tipping guidance: 15% for average service, 18-20% for good service, 25% for exceptional service.
US Tipping Standards
In the United States, standard restaurant tipping is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. For takeout, 10% is customary. For delivery, 15-20% plus any delivery fee. In many European countries, tipping is included in the bill or only a small 5-10% is added. In Japan, tipping is uncommon.
Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?
The traditional rule is to tip on the pre-tax amount. In practice, many people tip on the full post-tax total out of simplicity. The difference is small and either is socially acceptable in the US.
Splitting the Bill Fairly
For large groups, consider that some people may have ordered significantly more than others. Our calculator does an even split, but if one person had an expensive entree and another had an appetizer, you may want to adjust manually.
